Power strip

power strip

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_strip

Power strip

A power strip (also known as a plug board, power board, power bar, distribution board, gangplug, plugbar, multibox, extension lead or relocatable power tap) is a strip of sockets that attaches to the end of a flexible cable and allows multiple devices to be plugged in. As such it can be considered a type of trailing socket though that term is more often used for single and double cable mounted sockets. The term is also used to refer to the complete assembly with the power strip on one end and a plug on the other. Power strips are often used when many electrical devices are in proximity, especially with audio/video and computer systems.

They have a max wattage specified to them, such as 3500 W.

Dear Dr Yuan ,

my name is Bruno Loureiro and i'm from Instituto Superior Técnico - Taguspark (Lisbon, Portugal) and i'm doing my thesis to conclude Master degree in Engineering Systems and Computer Engineering.

My thesis is about facial expressions recognition for the iCat Robot ( from Philips). The iCat robot platform will be extended with the ability of detecting facial expression from image data, and a small demonstration will be created to test the adequacy of the integration and to evaluate the impact in user interaction. Now i'm doing the state of art of my thesis and I'm reading some articles, papers, proceedings of many people including Ekman,Rana, Picard, kaiser and other else.

I sent this e-mail to ask if you can help me. In your opinion, what is the best platform to start my work? How can i get it? I hope that your help will be very very important for me and my work. I know the openCV and I'm studding the potential of MPEG4 for this work. Do you advice me any system to use for my work? In the future, if i need integrate your work (your platform) in mine, can you send me and give me all rights to modify and include yours in my work? (obviously that you will be referenced in my work and i can send you all information about my work)

So, just more one question, do you know any facial expression recognition system besides yours? If you can give me those names i would be very grateful.

Please help me.
Thank you for all,

best regards,

Ps: sorry for my bad English :S

How to Default on Your Mortgage and Stay in Your House

Floyd Norris today finds one of the worst bonds ever underwritten: a securitization, by Merrill Lynch (MER), of second-lien mortgages mostly originated by Ownit. The kicker? When the bond was sold, Ownit had already gone bust, a victim of the fact that far too many of its loans were delinquent out of the gate.

But what's bad for bondholders might be good for homeowners.

Let's say you're a Californian who bought your $200,000 house with a $160,000 first mortgage at 6.5% and a $40,000 second mortgage at 11.2%. Your annual interest payments are $10,400 on the first, and $4,480 on the second, for a total of $14,880, or $1,240 a month.

When the housing market implodes, you can simply stop making payments on the second mortgage. As Norris explains:

"In light of the pressure on home prices and limited or negative borrower equity in their homes, many second liens were simply written off" after several months of payments were missed, Moody's said.

With these loans, it turns out, foreclosure is seldom worth the effort, since all the money would go to the first mortgage holder.

With no fear of foreclosure and being kicked out of your house, your monthly mortgage payments have dropped from $1,240 to $867 - a fall of 30%. And that's before you try to renegotiate your first-lien repayments.

It's walking away without walking away: you can default on your second lien, stay in your home, and see a large reduction in your monthly nut. And since you're in California, where mortgages are de facto non-recourse, you don't need to worry about the owner of the second lien trying to get a court judgment against you.

Of course, as Floyd Norris points out, you do give up any upside if and when you decide to sell the house. The second lien is still there, and unpaid interest payments are accumulating: should the house ever get sold, the second lien owner will take anything the first lien owner doesn't. And for the same reason, you'll never be able to use your house as security for a new loan.

Even so, the idea of walking away from a second mortgage seems much more compelling, especially in California, than the idea of jingle-mail, or walking away from a first mortgage. Which is one reason, I'm sure, that this bond of Merrill's is performing so badly.

Remote Assistance,A simple "GotoMeeting"

This is a short introduction to Remote Assistance, a useful tool in Windows.

a. start->Help and Support-> Invite a friend to connect to your computer with Remote Assistance

b. 选择Invite someone to help you, 用Messenger或者Outlook发送邀请.

2. 接收方

Yuan REN

Tip

Local Resources,

Israeli Labor Camp Revolts

Some 12 Isareli men are being held captive by hundreds of Chinese workers in Caribbean Turk Caicos islands. The Israeli women though. managed to escape via a boat as the Chinese workers advanced on the Israeli compound to demand their due pay and recoup expenses and fees they incurred. Apparently, the Chinese workers have not been paid their wages for some time.

The Israelis are employees of an international construction firm based in Israel, Ashtrom Engineering and Construction, a subdivision of Ashtrom Group ltd., which employed the 300 laborers for a large tourism project. The venture, however, was put on hold due to the global financial crisis.

The 12 Israelis have been held captive for 3 days on West Caicos, an isolated island accessible only via a 40-minute boat ride from the central island in the archipelago. The island does not have a police force and the Israelis did not provide security personnel, making it easy for the Chinese workers, who have taken control of the single marina, to hold the Israelis against their will.

The Chinese laborers are refusing to release the captives until they receive the money promised to them by the manpower company that was contracted to hire them for the project. A representative from Ashtrom told Ynet that the company had decided in principle to pay the laborers the full amount demanded. The company will also give the hostage-takers the money meant to have been paid by the Chinese manpower firm.

"The company has decided to pay the Chinese laborers everything, even the money we don't owe them but that the Chinese manpower firm charged them in return for sending them here – just to bring this situation to an end," said an Ashtrom representative, adding that the process was complex and was taking some time.

"The Chinese came to us with demands – but we're not the ones who took their money, it was the Chinese manpower company, and they're not willing to give it back. We're not the ones who owe the laborers – the Chinese contractors are. They have con men in China who take money from innocent laborers as commission for getting them into this project, and then they just disappear. We've paid all the wages we owe the workers, without exception. It's the Chinese company that's evading its responsibilities."

But if the Chinese company is a sub contractor to the Israeli firm they may be vicariously liable underrespondeat superior theory, i.e., they could be legally responsible even if only partially, because they are the parent agent of the contract inasmuch that they are a beneficiary of its formation and fulfillment.

These types of abuses of workers in similar international circumstances is a scourge to poor people trying to make a living around the world. Such cases of abusing worker have been taking place for centuries, e.g., the building of the panama canal and most recently the construction of the green zone and the super Embassy in Iraq. Thse Chinese workers are brave and I applaud them for agitating for their rights. They were fortunate though, that the IDF was not available to help these Israelis usurp their rights -- unlike the Palestinians within and without Israel.

(I'm really wondering how)是松隆子的《梦的点滴》,

Paulson's TRAP

http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=7AFA5CE4-18FE-70B2-A8D9A389E811D1D3

Last night, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, SEC Chairman Chris Cox and I had a lengthy and productive working session with Congressional leaders. We began a substantive discussion on the need for a comprehensive approach to relieving the stresses on our financial institutions and markets.

We have acted on a case-by-case basis in recent weeks, addressing problems at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, working with market participants to prepare for the failure of Lehman Brothers, and lending to AIG so it can sell some of its assets in an orderly manner. And this morning we've taken a number of powerful tactical steps to increase confidence in the system, including the establishment of a temporary guaranty program for the U.S. money market mutual fund industry.

Despite these steps, more is needed. We must now take further, decisive action to fundamentally and comprehensively address the root cause of our financial system's stresses.

The underlying weakness in our financial system today is the illiquid mortgage assets that have lost value as the housing correction has proceeded. These illiquid assets are choking off the flow of credit that is so vitally important to our economy. When the financial system works as it should, money and capital flow to and from households and businesses to pay for home loans, school loans and investments that create jobs. As illiquid mortgage assets block the system, the clogging of our financial markets has the potential to have significant effects on our financial system and our economy.

As we all know, lax lending practices earlier this decade led to irresponsible lending and irresponsible borrowing. This simply put too many families into mortgages they could not afford. We are seeing the impact on homeowners and neighborhoods, with 5 million homeowners now delinquent or in foreclosure. What began as a sub-prime lending problem has spread to other, less-risky mortgages, and contributed to excess home inventories that have pushed down home prices for responsible homeowners.

A similar scenario is playing out among the lenders who made those mortgages, the securitizers who bought, repackaged and resold them, and the investors who bought them. These troubled loans are now parked, or frozen, on the balance sheets of banks and other financial institutions, preventing them from financing productive loans. The inability to determine their worth has fostered uncertainty about mortgage assets, and even about the financial condition of the institutions that own them. The normal buying and selling of nearly all types of mortgage assets has become challenged.

These illiquid assets are clogging up our financial system, and undermining the strength of our otherwise sound financial institutions. As a result, Americans' personal savings are threatened, and the ability of consumers and businesses to borrow and finance spending, investment, and job creation has been disrupted.

To restore confidence in our markets and our financial institutions, so they can fuel continued growth and prosperity, we must address the underlying problem.

The federal government must implement a program to remove these illiquid assets that are weighing down our financial institutions and threatening our economy. This troubled asset relief program must be properly designed and sufficiently large to have maximum impact, while including features that protect the taxpayer to the maximum extent possible. The ultimate taxpayer protection will be the stability this troubled asset relief program provides to our financial system, even as it will involve a significant investment of taxpayer dollars. I am convinced that this bold approach will cost American families far less than the alternative — a continuing series of financial institution failures and frozen credit markets unable to fund economic expansion.

I believe many Members of Congress share my conviction. I will spend the weekend working with members of Congress of both parties to examine approaches to alleviate the pressure of these bad loans on our system, so credit can flow once again to American consumers and companies. Our economic health requires that we work together for prompt, bipartisan action.

As we work with the Congress to pass this legislation over the next week, other immediate actions will provide relief.

First, to provide critical additional funding to our mortgage markets, the GSEs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will increase their purchases of mortgage-backed securities (MBS). These two enterprises must carry out their mission to support the mortgage market.

Second, to increase the availability of capital for new home loans, Treasury will expand the MBS purchase program we announced earlier this month. This will complement the capital provided by the GSEs and will help facilitate mortgage availability and affordability.

These two steps will provide some initial support to mortgage assets, but they are not enough. Many of the illiquid assets clogging our system today do not meet the regulatory requirements to be eligible for purchase by the GSEs or by the Treasury program.

I look forward to working with Congress to pass necessary legislation to remove these troubled assets from our financial system. When we get through this difficult period, which we will, our next task must be to improve the financial regulatory structure so that these past excesses do not recur. This crisis demonstrates in vivid terms that our financial regulatory structure is sub-optimal, duplicative and outdated. I have put forward my ideas for a modernized financial oversight structure that matches our modern economy, and more closely links the regulatory structure to the reasons why we regulate. That is a critical debate for another day.

Right now, our focus is restoring the strength of our financial system so it can again finance economic growth. The financial security of all Americans — their retirement savings, their home values, their ability to borrow for college, and the opportunities for more and higher-paying jobs — depends on our ability to restore our financial institutions to a sound footing.
